What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare a model with the object, system, or process it represents. They explain what the model shows well and what it leaves out or changes.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name a model’s useful features and specific limits. They connect each strength or limit to its size, scale, physical traits, or construction material.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a realistic-looking model represents every feature accurately. They may confuse size with scale or assume model materials behave like the real materials.
How to Assess It
- Show students a plastic skeleton model. Ask, “What does this model show well, and what limitation comes from its size or material?”

Build a clay cell model, then label one feature the material shows well and one feature it cannot represent accurately.
Write: When would a map be more useful than a globe, and what information would each leave out?
