What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare a model with the object or system it represents. They explain what the model shows well and what it cannot show accurately because of its dimensions, proportions, features, or construction.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a useful feature of a model and a feature that differs from the real object. The student can explain how that difference affects the model's usefulness.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a larger or more realistic-looking model is always better. They may assume model colors, materials, and spacing match the real object exactly, or that every part uses the same proportion.
How to Assess It
- Show a plastic solar system model and ask: What does this model help you understand, and what does it show inaccurately? Explain both answers.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a toy animal and a photo of the real animal, then have them label two helpful features and two inaccurate features.
Have students write when a map helps more than a globe and name one detail each representation leaves out.
Play Model Match: teams pair model cards with purpose cards, then earn a point for naming one strength and one weakness.
Show a weather map and ask students what it helps meteorologists see and what local conditions it cannot fully represent.
