What Students Need to Do
- Students compare a model with the object, system, or process it represents. They explain how size, scale, properties, and materials make the model useful or misleading.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a model, students can name a specific advantage and limitation using evidence. They can explain how changing its scale or materials would affect its usefulness.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think a model is an exact copy or that a larger model is always more accurate. They may overlook missing properties, unrealistic materials, or distorted scale.
How to Assess It
- Show a foam ball model of Earth and ask: “Name one advantage and one limitation related to its size, scale, properties, or material.”
