What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize measurements in tables, then add, subtract, multiply, or divide to compare results. They use their calculations to describe a pattern or relationship in the data.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose a calculation that fits the data and show their work with correct units. They explain what the result reveals about how two quantities change or compare.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may describe what they notice without calculating, or use the wrong operation. They may compare numbers from different trials, omit units, or claim a pattern from only one result.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: A car travels 30, 60, and 90 centimeters on tile and 15, 30, and 45 centimeters on carpet. Calculate each trial’s difference and describe the relationship.
