What Students Need to Do: Students examine tables, graphs, and observations to find highs, lows, changes, repeated results, and unusual values. They explain how measurement mistakes or inconsistent procedures may have affected the results.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately describe a pattern and support it with specific data points. They notice an unusual result and name a reasonable cause, such as misreading a scale.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat every small change as meaningful or ignore a value that does not fit the pattern. They may call an unexpected result an error without explaining what could have caused it.
How to Assess It: Give students these plant heights: 4, 6, 8, and 19 centimeters. Ask them to describe the pattern, identify the unusual value, and name one possible measurement error.

Lesson moves

Measure cooling water every two minutes, graph the results, and discuss any reading that breaks the overall pattern.
Show a graph with one unusual point and ask students to write whether it reflects real change or measurement error.
Play Data Detective by having teams sort cards into pattern, significant feature, possible error, or not enough evidence.
Compare seven days of local temperatures, identify the weekly pattern, and suggest why one reading might differ sharply.
