What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students sort and compare objects using features they can see, feel, or measure. They predict how warming or cooling will change familiar materials. They also explain how arranged parts work together to make one object.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can sort the same objects in more than one way and explain each sorting rule. They make sensible predictions about heating and cooling. They can take apart and rebuild a simple object, then describe what its parts do.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think larger objects are always heavier. They may assume heating always melts materials and cooling always freezes them. They may view any pile of parts as a whole object, even when the parts are not arranged to work together.

How to Assess It

Set out four classroom objects and a picture of a wheeled toy. Ask students to sort the objects, state their rule, predict what happens to ice in warmth, and label two parts that help the toy move.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a tray of buttons, fabric squares, and blocks to sort by color, shape, texture, size, and weight.

  2. Show an ice cube and ask students to draw and explain what will happen in sunlight and then in a freezer.

  3. Play Mystery Object by having students describe a hidden item using three physical properties while classmates identify it.

  4. Inspect a zippered backpack, then name how the zipper, straps, pockets, and fabric work together to carry supplies.
