What Students Need to Do: Students identify the parts of an object and describe how the parts work together. They take apart a simple object, put it back together, and explain why the arrangement matters.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name the whole, point out its parts, and reassemble it correctly. The student can explain what happens when a part is missing or placed incorrectly.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think any group of pieces makes a working object. They may also believe parts can be placed anywhere or removed without changing how the object works.
How to Assess It: Give students a picture of a toy with one part missing. Ask them to circle the missing part and explain why the toy needs it.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a snap-together toy to take apart, sort by part, rebuild, and explain how each piece helps form the whole.
Ask students to draw a familiar toy, label three parts, and write or tell how the parts work together.
Play a matching game where students pair picture cards of parts, such as wheels or handles, with the correct whole objects.
Examine a backpack, then discuss how its straps, zipper, pockets, and handle are arranged to make it useful.
