What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine small pieces to make an object for a stated job, then take the pieces apart and use them in a new way. They name properties, such as strength, flexibility, texture, or shape, that make each material a good choice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can build two useful objects from the same set of pieces. The student names a specific material property and explains how it helps each object work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name color or personal preference instead of a property connected to the object’s job. They may think reassembling means adding new pieces, or that every material will work equally well.
How to Assess It
- Give students blocks, craft sticks, and pipe cleaners. Ask them to choose pieces for a toy bridge, reassemble those pieces as a fence, and explain one material choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs blocks, straws, and connectors to build a toy bed, then reuse the same pieces to make a toy chair.
Ask students to write: Would stiff craft sticks or flexible pipe cleaners make better table legs, and why?
Play Purpose Pick: students draw a job card, select three pieces, build quickly, and earn a point for naming a useful property.
Show photos of brick walls, tile floors, and wooden fences, then have students identify the repeated units and why each material fits.
