What Students Need to Do

Students connect rocks, soil, and water to the needs of plants, animals, and people. They explain why clean water should not be wasted or polluted and name ways to protect it.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can match examples such as roots growing in soil, animals drinking water, and people building with rock. The student can explain how closing a faucet or removing litter helps save clean water.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think soil is useless dirt or that rocks are not used to make products. They may believe faucet water is unlimited or that litter on land cannot reach lakes and streams.

How to Assess It

Ask students to draw and label one use for soil, rock, or water and one action that saves or protects water. Have them explain both drawings aloud.

   Give pairs rocks, soil, water, toy plants, animals, and people, then have them match each material to ways living things use it.

   Ask, "How would our school change without clean water?" Have students draw one effect and explain it to a partner.

   Play Water Saver Charades with cards showing closing faucets, picking up litter, fixing leaks, and watering plants with collected rainwater.

   Walk around campus to find water use, leaks, and litter risks, then list actions the class can take to protect local water.
