What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students examine soil samples and sort them by visible and touchable properties. They observe moving water, compare kinds of water bodies, and record daily weather. They use observations to explain where soil moves and how weather affects choices.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can describe and compare topsoil, clay, and sand using several properties. They can explain that flowing water carries particles to new places. They can compare water bodies and use weather observations to choose suitable clothing or activities.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think soil is one uniform material or identify samples by color alone. They may think moving water makes rock and soil disappear instead of carrying particles. They may assume large water bodies are always salty or confuse cloudy, windy, and cold conditions.

How to Assess It

Give a four-box exit ticket: describe a soil sample, show how water moves sand, compare a pond and ocean, and choose clothing for rainy weather.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs topsoil, clay, and sand samples, then have them sort, touch, sketch, and label each sample's properties.

  2. Ask students to write: How would a windy, rainy day change what you wear and do at recess?

  3. Play a picture sorting game where students group water bodies by size, water type, clarity, or movement.

  4. Observe a puddle after rain, then mark its shape and clarity each day until it changes or disappears.
