What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students explain how sunlight warms ocean water, causing evaporation that contributes to clouds, precipitation, and weather. They model how sedimentary rocks and fossil fuels form over time. They also show how wind, water, and ice erode, move, and deposit material to shape landforms.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can label and explain cause-and-effect relationships in water cycle, rock formation, and landform models. They can identify the processes that form deltas, canyons, and sand dunes from diagrams or observations.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think clouds contain ocean water that stayed salty or that the Sun pulls water upward. They may confuse weathering, erosion, and deposition. They may also think sedimentary rocks and fossil fuels form quickly or through identical processes.

How to Assess It

Give students a six-item exit ticket. Ask them to label a Sun-ocean weather diagram, order rock formation steps, and match deltas, canyons, and dunes with their forming processes.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Pour water over a sloped sand tray, blow through a straw, and drag an ice cube across clay to compare surface changes.

  2. Write: How can a sunny ocean help produce clouds, rain, and changing weather later that day?

  3. Teams race to order picture cards for sedimentary rock and fossil fuel formation, then explain each transition to earn the point.

  4. Use a Texas coast or river map to locate a delta, dune, or canyon and identify the agent that shaped it.
