What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe rocks and sort them by size, shape, color, and texture. They compare weather across days and seasons. They use simple objects to show that air is present and wind is moving air.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can sort the same rocks in different ways and name the property used. They can describe changes shown on a weather calendar. They can use a ribbon or pinwheel and explain that moving air caused its motion.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse shape with texture or think rocks can fit only one group. They may treat one cold or rainy day as proof of a season. They may think air exists only when wind is blowing or that a pinwheel creates wind.

How to Assess It

Give each student two rocks, two weather pictures, and a ribbon. Ask them to compare the rocks, describe the weather change, and move the ribbon using air.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set out rocks and sorting hoops; students sort by color, then regroup the same rocks by texture, size, or shape.

  2. Compare photos of the same playground in summer and winter, then ask, "What weather clues show that the season changed?"

  3. Play Air Detective by testing a fan, a hand wave, and a breath with ribbons, then naming what moved the air.

  4. Use a weekly forecast to choose a coat, umbrella, or sun hat for each day and explain each choice.
