What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students observe the sky during the day and in pictures of nighttime. They name what they see, describe changes, sequence day and night, and predict what comes next.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can place sky pictures in a repeating day and night sequence and explain the order. The student can draw and label the Sun, Moon, stars, or clouds based on observations.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the Moon appears only at night or that stars disappear during the day. They may also think clouds cause night by covering the Sun.

How to Assess It

Give students three sky pictures to order: daytime, nighttime, daytime. Ask them to draw what comes next and name two things they might see.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs daytime and nighttime photo cards to sort, then ask them to explain which clues helped them decide.

  2. Show a sky photo and ask, "What do you notice, and what might the sky look like next?"

  3. Play Sky Sequence Relay, where students take turns adding Sun, Moon, star, or cloud cards to a repeating pattern.

  4. Use a local sunrise and sunset chart to mark when children wake, attend school, eat dinner, and go to bed.
