What Students Need to Do: Students tell whether a scene shows daytime or nighttime by using light and sky clues. They describe the repeating order and say which one should come next.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can sort unfamiliar photos into daytime and nighttime groups and explain each choice. Given daytime, nighttime, daytime, the student selects nighttime next and names a visible clue.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call any cloudy or dark scene nighttime, or use sleeping and school activities as their only evidence. They may think the Moon appears only at night, or that daytime and nighttime occur randomly.
How to Assess It: Show three picture cards: daytime, nighttime, daytime. Ask students to draw the next scene and add one light or sky clue.

Lesson moves

Shine a flashlight on a foam ball, rotate it, and have students name daytime or nighttime at a marked spot.
Ask, “What clues tell you whether it is daytime or nighttime, and what do you expect to come next?”
Reveal daytime and nighttime scene cards in sequence, then have students hold up the card they predict comes next.
For five school days, students draw the sky at arrival and share how they expect it to look after bedtime.
