What Students Need to Do

Students sort materials found in nature from objects made by people. They connect common products to natural sources and choose ways to use less, reuse items, recycle, or use the correct waste bin.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given familiar examples, a student correctly labels a rock, tree, and water as natural, and a bottle, paper sheet, and spoon as human-made. The student explains how one reuse or disposal choice saves materials or reduces waste.

Common Misconceptions

Students may call paper natural because it comes from trees, or call a metal can natural because metal comes from the ground. Some think any item found outdoors is natural. Others think every discarded item belongs in recycling, even when local bins do not accept it.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of a tree, rock, paper cup, and plastic toy, then ask students to label each natural or human-made. Ask how they should handle a used paper bag and how that choice helps.

   Set out a rock, twig, paper, bottle, and spoon; students sort them, then match each made object to its natural source.
