What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain how everyday choices can reduce waste and save natural resources. They decide when to use less, use an item again, recycle it, or place it in the correct trash bin.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a paper, plastic, or metal item, students choose a reasonable action and explain how it limits waste or resource use. They follow bin labels and recognize that local recycling rules can differ.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every plastic item belongs in recycling. They may confuse reusing an object with turning it into a new material. They may also believe throwing something away removes its effect on land and resources.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Draw one paper, plastic, or metal item you used today, label it "use less," "reuse," "recycle," or "trash," and explain why.

Ways to Teach It
Set out clean paper, plastic, and metal objects; students sort them into labeled bins and explain one way to avoid waste.
Ask students to write: Which lunch item could our class use less, reuse, or recycle, and how would that reduce waste?
Play Four Corners with choice cards: use less, use again, recycle, or trash; students move and defend each choice.
Track the class's paper use for one day, choose one change, such as using both sides, and compare the next day.
