What Students Need to Do: Students identify actions that save materials, water, energy, and other natural resources. They sort examples by whether they use less, use something again, or make old materials into new products.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly classify everyday actions and explain how each one saves a resource. They can suggest a realistic choice for home or school.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every unwanted item belongs in a recycling bin. They may confuse reusing an object with recycling it, or assume natural resources cannot run out.
How to Assess It: Give this exit ticket: “Write one way our class could use less paper, reuse an item, and recycle a material. Label each action.”

Lesson moves

Give groups clean classroom discards to sort into reduce, reuse, recycle, and trash bins, then discuss each choice.
Ask students to write which lunchroom habit wastes the most resources and propose one specific change.
Play a card sort race using action cards such as printing fewer pages, refilling bottles, and recycling cans.
Conduct a one-day classroom paper audit, count discarded sheets, and choose one action to reduce the next day’s total.
