5.11 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

What Students Need to Do

Students examine how everyday use of water, energy, wood, minerals, or fuels can create waste or pollution. They design a workable response and explain how it reduces harm. They also consider cost, safety, convenience, and local disposal rules.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can study a specific problem, such as wasted cafeteria food or batteries placed in the trash. The student draws a labeled plan with clear steps. The explanation links each step to less waste, pollution, or resource use and names a realistic tradeoff.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think recycling removes all environmental effects, or that every plastic item belongs in the same bin. They may call cleanup conservation, even when it happens after waste is created. They may propose a slogan without explaining what action changes or how it helps.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: A school throws away hundreds of plastic water bottles each week. Sketch one solution, explain how it reduces harm, and name one possible drawback.

   Sort a prepared bin of clean classroom waste, then design labeled stations for reuse, recycling, compost, and safe disposal.
