What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect natural resources to buildings, farming, transportation, and everyday products. They explain why resources should be conserved and choose ways to reduce, reuse, or recycle materials.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given an object or activity, students can name the natural resource involved and explain how people use it. They can suggest a practical conservation action and explain how it saves resources or reduces waste.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think natural resources cannot run out or that all resources can be replaced quickly. They often confuse reusing an item with recycling its material. Some think every discarded object can go in a recycling bin.
How to Assess It
- Show a wooden chair and a plastic bottle. Ask students to name a resource used for each, then write one way to conserve that resource and why it helps.

Ways to Teach It
Set out wood, cotton, clay, gravel, and a metal can, then have groups match each sample to a product or human use.
Ask students to write which classroom resource is wasted most and propose one reduce, reuse, or recycle action.
Run a card sort relay with examples from construction, farming, transportation, and products, then match each card to a conservation action.
Conduct a one-day classroom trash audit, count common items, and create a class plan to reduce, reuse, or recycle them.
