What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students research how decisions about air, water, soil, and energy affect access to food, clean water, clean air, and reliable power. They explain how conservation, efficiency, and technology can reduce waste, shortages, and pollution.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can use evidence from sources to connect a resource problem to human health or daily life. The student can compare management strategies and explain which resource each strategy protects and how it helps.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat conservation and efficiency as the same idea. They may assume technology solves problems without costs or tradeoffs. They may overlook how energy access and clean soil or water affect food production.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: A town has dirty river water, eroding farmland, and frequent power shortages. Propose one conservation action, one efficiency improvement, and one technology, then explain each effect.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Use watt meters to compare four classroom devices, calculate energy used in one hour, and identify one practical way to reduce it.

  2. Write a claim explaining which local resource should receive funding first, then support it with two facts from provided source cards.

  3. Sort solution cards by conservation, efficiency, or technology, then match each card to air, water, soil, or energy.

  4. Examine your city's water quality report and utility website, then list two management methods and the problems they address.
