What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students classify resources as renewable or nonrenewable and compare the benefits and drawbacks of using each one. They explain how energy supports daily life, how resource management affects the environment, and how pores in rocks can store water, oil, or gas.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can compare resources such as wind and coal using availability, pollution, cost, and reliability. They can explain why reducing waste, recycling, and proper disposal help, and identify porous rocks that can store resources.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think renewable resources never run out or cause environmental harm. They may picture oil and water in large underground pools instead of tiny rock pores and connected spaces.

How to Assess It

Give a three-part exit ticket: compare wind and oil, explain one effect of recycling, and circle which pictured rock could store water based on pores.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Test sandstone, limestone, and granite samples with droppers, then record which absorb water and let it move through connected spaces.

  2. Ask: Should our town build a wind farm or gas plant? Students defend a choice using two benefits and two drawbacks.

  3. Sort resource cards into renewable and nonrenewable groups, then match each card to a conservation, recycling, or disposal action.

  4. Audit classroom energy and waste for one day, then calculate items saved by switching off lights and sorting recyclables.
