What Students Need to Do: Students identify resources that come from Earth and connect each one to a specific human use. They explain how a resource is changed or used to build, grow food, move people, or make goods.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can trace familiar items, such as a wooden house or plastic bottle, back to the resources used to make them. They can explain how farms and vehicles depend on resources such as soil, water, metals, and oil.
Common Misconceptions: Students may label bricks, plastic bottles, and cars as natural resources instead of products made from them. They may think natural resources must be living or unchanged. They may name a resource without explaining how people use it.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Choose two of these, a house, a farm, a bus, or a water bottle. Name one natural resource each uses and explain how.

Lesson moves

Give groups wood, cotton, clay, metal, and water samples, plus oil picture cards, then match each resource to product cards.
Write: Choose a house, a farm, or a bus. Which natural resources does it depend on, and how are they used?
Play Resource Relay: teams draw a resource card, place it under construction, farming, transportation, or products, then explain their choice.
Tour the classroom or schoolyard, list five objects, and trace each to wood, metal, stone, cotton, water, or oil.
