What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect rocks, soil, and water to specific needs or jobs for living things and people. They name who uses each material and explain how, using examples such as shelter, growth, drinking, or building.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can sort examples accurately and explain each connection in a full sentence. They can describe a plant taking in water, an animal burrowing in soil, and a person building with rock.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may say plants eat soil rather than get water and support from it. They may think rocks are only useful to people or that water is only for drinking. Some confuse where something lives with how it uses the material.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with three boxes labeled plant, animal, and person. In each box, students draw one material being used and write or dictate how it helps.

Ways to Teach It
Set out rocks, soil, water, and picture cards, then have pairs match each card to a material and explain the match.
Ask, “How would a garden, rabbit, and family be affected if their water disappeared?” and record one reason for each.
Play Material Match by showing an action card while students hold up a rock, soil, or water card.
Walk around the schoolyard and sketch one observed use of rock, soil, or water by a plant, animal, or person.
