What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students examine rocks, soil, and water and describe what they notice. They name ways people use each material, such as building, growing plants, drinking, and cleaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match each material to at least one sensible use. The student can explain the match with a drawing, words, or a spoken sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think soil is only dirt with no useful purpose. They may confuse where a material is found with how people use it, or name unsafe uses such as drinking muddy water.
How to Assess It
- Give students pictures of a rock, soil, and water. Ask them to draw one practical use for each and explain one drawing aloud.

Ways to Teach It
Set out rocks, soil, and water in clear containers, then have students match each material to picture cards showing possible uses.
Ask, “Which material would help you build, grow, or clean something?” and have students draw and label one answer.
Play Material Match by showing a use card while students hold up a rock, soil, or water card and explain their choice.
Walk around the school grounds to find rocks, soil, and water, then sketch one place where people use each material.
