What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name actions that use less water and keep streams, ponds, and lakes clean. They explain how each action saves or protects water.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a picture or situation, students choose a helpful action and give a simple reason. They can tell the difference between saving water and preventing pollution.

Common Misconceptions

Some students think tap water is unlimited because more appears when the faucet opens. They may think one piece of litter cannot harm a pond. They may also confuse saving water with cleaning polluted water.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Draw one way to use less water and one way to keep a pond clean. Label each picture and tell how it helps.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Let a bottle drip into a cup for five minutes, count the spoonfuls collected, and discuss how fixing leaks prevents waste.

  2. Students draw and write one safe action for the prompt, What should our class do when trash lies beside a creek?

  3. Sort picture cards into saves water, protects water, or harms water, then have partners explain one card.

  4. Take a school water walk to spot dripping faucets, running fountains, or litter near drains, then make a class action list.
