What Students Need to Do: Students explain that people, plants, and animals need clean water, so usable water should not be wasted. They name simple choices that save water.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can identify whether an action saves or wastes water and explain why. They can suggest a better choice, such as turning off the faucet while brushing.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think Earth has so much water that people can never run short. They may also think saving water means drinking less water rather than stopping waste.
How to Assess It: Ask, "Draw one way you can save water at home. Write or tell why that choice helps."

Set a dripping bottle over a measuring cup, then have students observe how much water collects in five minutes.
