Student Expectations in This Statement
1.1 is a TEKS knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

ask questions and define problems based on observations or information from text, phenomena, models, or investigations

What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students ask questions from what they notice and plan simple, safe tests. They choose tools, collect observations or measurements, and record evidence with pictures, words, numbers, symbols, or graphs. They also use models or build prototypes to explain ideas and solve problems.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name a question, choose a suitable tool, and follow safety steps during an investigation. The student records clear evidence, compares results, and uses the evidence to explain what happened. The student can make a model or prototype and describe what it shows or solves.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a guess as evidence or record what they expected instead of what they observed. They may choose tools by appearance rather than purpose. Some students think models must look exactly like real objects or that safety rules apply only when something is hot.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “You want to learn which soil holds the most water. Draw or write one tool, one safety step, and how you would record the results.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sand, clay, sieves, cups, and trays to compare particle size, then record findings with drawings and words.
Show a photo of a wilted plant and ask students to write one observation, one question, and one possible solution.
Play a tool-match game where students pair hand lenses, balances, thermometers, and rain gauges with investigation cards.
Have students build a simple rain gauge from a clear cup, mark water levels, and graph rainfall for one week.
