What Students Need to Do: Students capture what they observe in a form others can understand. They sort results into groups and make a basic chart or graph with clear labels.
What Mastery Looks Like: After sorting objects, a student can count each group and create a display that matches the totals. The student can explain what each mark and label means.
Common Misconceptions: Students may draw the objects but not show how many belong in each group. They may use unequal picture sizes or let one symbol stand for different amounts. They may omit labels, making the display hard to read.
How to Assess It: Give students a card showing four red buttons, two blue buttons, and three green buttons. Ask them to make a labeled picture graph and write each total.

Lesson moves

Sort 12 classroom objects by material, count each group, and record the results with tally marks and a picture graph.
Show two graphs of the same results and ask, “Which graph is easier to understand, and why?”
Roll a number cube five times, record each result, then compare completed class graphs to find matching totals.
Track sunny, cloudy, and rainy days for one week, then create a class weather graph with labels and totals.
