- Scientific and engineering practices. The student asks questions, identifies problems, and plans and safely conducts classroom, laboratory, and field investigations to answer questions, explain phenomena, or design solutions using appropriate tools and models. The student is expected to:

What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students collect observations and record them with drawings, counts, labels, or symbols. They organize the information in a simple picture graph or bar graph so patterns are easy to see.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can turn a set of observations into an accurate, labeled record. The student can make a simple graph and explain what each number, picture, or symbol represents.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw objects without counting them or use symbols inconsistently. They may leave out graph labels, make bars the wrong length, or record guesses instead of observations.
How to Assess It
- Give students this data: 4 red cubes, 2 blue cubes, and 3 yellow cubes. Ask them to make a labeled graph and write one sentence about the results.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a bag of buttons to sort, count, record with numerals, and display in a picture graph.
Show two records of the same weather data and ask, "Which one makes the pattern easiest to see, and why?"
Play Data Match by having students pair observation cards with matching tally charts, picture graphs, and number records.
Tally class lunch choices, make a bar graph, and write a result to share with the cafeteria manager.
