What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students organize measurements from several trials and calculate the mean for each condition. They choose a table, graph, chart, or map that clearly shows the results and patterns.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student records raw trials and correct means in an organized table. The student selects a suitable display, uses an even scale, and includes clear titles, labels, and units.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may divide by the wrong number when finding a mean or graph every trial instead of the means. They may use uneven scales, omit units, or choose a line graph for unrelated categories.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: A plant grew 4, 5, and 6 centimeters under one light and 8, 7, and 9 centimeters under another. Find each mean and make a labeled graph comparing them.

Ways to Teach It
Run three toy car trials at each ramp height, record distances in a table, calculate means, and graph mean distance by height.
Display two graphs of the same data and ask: Which graph communicates the result better, and what specific feature helps?
Play a card sort where teams match data sets to a table, bar graph, line graph, chart, or map and justify each match.
Take three noise readings at four school locations, average each set, then create a color coded map of campus sound levels.
