What Students Need to Do
- Students choose a graphic organizer that fits the information or data they collect. They add clear titles, labels, categories, scales, connections, or arrows so the organizer is easy to read.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can independently create a useful table, graph, map, or diagram from an investigation. They organize information accurately and explain why the chosen format fits the data or relationship.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use bar graphs for change over time or line graphs for unrelated categories. They may skip titles, units, equal scale intervals, or category labels. They may also reverse cause and effect or place steps out of order.
How to Assess It
- Give students plant height measurements from five days. Ask them to choose and construct an organizer, label it fully, and explain their choice in one sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Measure water temperature every minute for ten minutes, record results in a table, then construct a labeled line graph.
Ask students to write which organizer best shows similarities, steps, categories, change over time, and cause and effect, with reasons.
Play an organizer match game using data cards and table, graph, Venn diagram, flow chart, and concept map cards.
Tally one week of classroom recycling by material, then create a bar graph to identify the most and least discarded items.
