What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select a visual format that fits the information they collect. They organize measurements, categories, comparisons, steps, relationships, or cause-and-effect results with clear labels.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently choose a suitable organizer and enter data accurately. Their work has a title, clear labels, consistent scales when needed, and relationships that are easy to follow.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a bar graph for changes over time or use uneven intervals on a line graph. They may omit labels, mix categories, or reverse causes and effects in a flow chart.
How to Assess It
- Give students this prompt: A plant was 4, 7, 9, and 12 centimeters tall on days 1, 3, 5, and 7. Create the best organizer, label it, and explain your choice.

Ways to Teach It
Measure an ice cube every two minutes, record the data in a table, then turn the results into a line graph.
Ask students to compare a Venn diagram and a concept map, then write which one better shows similarities between two animals.
Place scenario cards beside organizer mats, and have teams match each scenario to the most useful organizer.
Survey classmates about transportation to school, tally the responses, and create a labeled bar graph for the class newsletter.
