What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students collect observations or counts and make a record with drawings, numerals, labels, or agreed symbols. They sort the information into a simple chart or picture graph so others can read it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can count a small set, enter the result in the correct place, and add a matching picture or label. The finished graph has clear categories, one mark per item, and totals that match the data.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may draw decorative pictures instead of recording one mark for each item. They may place marks in the wrong category, skip items, count an item twice, or think a taller column means larger objects.
How to Assess It
- Give each student a cup with 3 red and 5 blue counters. Ask, “Record the counters in a two-category picture graph, then circle the group with more.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a tray of buttons; students sort by color, tally each group with stickers, and build a two-column picture graph.
Show a class weather chart and ask, “What does each symbol mean, and which weather happened most?” Students write or draw evidence.
Play Data Relay: students draw a category card, count matching objects, and place that many cubes on a class graph.
Survey how classmates travel to school, record each answer with one symbol, then compare the graph’s columns.
