What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students ask a simple question, choose materials, follow steps, observe closely, and record what they notice. They also build, test, and improve an object that solves a problem.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can explain their plan before starting and describe results using words, drawings, or simple measurements. They can test a design and name one useful change.

Common Misconceptions

Students may record guesses instead of observations or begin without a plan. They may think the first design must work or change it without explaining why.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit ticket: Plan how you would compare two paper towels, then draw one tool you would use and one observation you would record.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give groups ice cubes, plates, and cups, then have them plan and observe which covering slows melting.

  2. Ask students to write or draw how an investigation plan differs from a plan for building a solution.

  3. Play Plan, Test, Improve by giving teams picture cards to arrange in a sensible design order.

  4. Challenge students to build a foil tray that carries five counters across a tub of water.
