What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students plan observations and fair tests by naming the question, materials, steps, variables, and data to collect. They carry out the plan safely, record measurements and observations, and use evidence to explain results. For a design problem, they set criteria and limits, build or model a solution, test it, and improve it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a question, students can choose whether to observe conditions or change one variable. They write repeatable steps, collect useful data, and support a conclusion with evidence. They test a designed solution against stated criteria and revise it based on results.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often change several variables at once or forget a comparison condition. They may treat a prediction as a conclusion, record vague notes instead of measurements, or skip repeated trials. In design work, they may choose the first idea without testing it against criteria and limits.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Your class wants to find which cup material keeps water cold longest. Write a fair test plan, then sketch an improved cup and name one success criterion.

Ways to Teach It
Give teams paper, tape, and index cards to build a bridge, test its load, record results, and revise once.
Show two plant growth plans and ask students to identify the fair test, citing variables, controls, and measurable data.
Run a variable sort where teams label cards as changed, measured, or controlled, then repair investigations with two changed variables.
Test three lunchbox insulators with ice cubes, then recommend a material using melting data and cost.
