What Students Need to Do: Students notice details and use simple tools to gather information. They record words, drawings, numbers, and units that can support an answer.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students make careful observations and measure with the correct tool. They use their recorded information to answer a question instead of guessing.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give an opinion instead of a detail they observed. They may start measuring at the wrong ruler mark, omit units, or record a number without explaining what it describes.
How to Assess It: Give students two leaves and a ruler. Ask, “Which leaf is longer?” and have them record one observation and both measurements as evidence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs three classroom objects to observe, measure with linking cubes, and record on a simple data table.
Ask students to write or draw two observations that prove which of two rocks is smoother.
Play Evidence Sort by having students place statement cards under observation, measurement, or guess.
Track playground temperature and cloud cover each day, then use the records to identify the warmest day.
