What Students Need to Do: Students use their senses and tools to gather facts during an investigation. They record clear descriptions and measurements with labels and units. They use the records to support a claim.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student records what happened without mixing in guesses or opinions. Measurements include the correct tool, number, and unit. The student points to specific data when explaining a result.
Common Misconceptions: Students may write an inference, such as “the plant is unhealthy,” instead of describing yellow leaves. They may leave off units or record only results that match their prediction. Some students change measuring methods between trials.
How to Assess It: Give each student a leaf and a ruler. Ask for two descriptive notes, two labeled measurements, and one claim supported by those records.

Lesson moves

Teams test how quickly two soils absorb 50 milliliters of water, recording time, color, texture, and remaining water.
Show a class data table and ask, “Which claim does the evidence support, and which entries prove it?”
Play Data Sort with cards showing measurements, direct observations, opinions, and inferences, then have pairs explain each placement.
Students keep a five-day weather log using a thermometer, rain gauge, cloud descriptions, and consistent observation times.
