What Students Need to Do: Students use their senses and simple tools to gather facts about an object or event. They record clear details and numbers that help answer a question.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students record details another person could verify. Measurements include correct units, and conclusions point to specific findings from their notes or data table.
Common Misconceptions: Students may record vague words such as “big” or “nice,” or leave units off measurements. They may treat guesses as observations or choose facts unrelated to the question.
How to Assess It: Give each student a leaf and ruler. Ask for two observations, one measurement with units, and one claim supported by those findings.

Lesson moves

Place ice cubes in sun and shade, measure their width every two minutes, and use a table to decide which melts faster.
Show two soil samples and ask, "Which would hold more water, and what observations support your answer?"
Play Evidence Sort: teams place statement cards under observation, measurement, or opinion, then correct misplaced cards.
Measure playground surface temperatures in three locations, then write a recommendation for where younger students should sit during lunch.
