What Students Need to Do: Students use their senses and simple tools to notice and measure features of objects or events. They record what they see and measure, then use those facts as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can make accurate observations, measure with tools such as cubes or a balance, and record results with pictures or numbers. They use the results to answer a simple question.
Common Misconceptions: Students may give opinions or guesses instead of reporting what they observed. They may start measuring from different points, leave gaps between units, or change units during a measurement.
How to Assess It: Give students two crayons and connecting cubes. Ask them to record one observation, measure both crayons, and explain which is longer using their measurements.

Lesson moves

Give pairs three leaves to observe, measure with cubes, and arrange from shortest to longest.
Show ice melting and ask students to draw two observations that prove it changed.
Play Evidence or Guess by sorting statements about a classroom object into observed facts and guesses.
Track a bean plant’s height with cubes each day and use the records to show how it grew.
