What Students Need to Do: Students use their senses and tools to gather facts during an investigation. They record clear descriptions and measurements with correct units, then use those records to support a claim.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student records details in an organized table without changing or leaving out results. Measurements include labels and units, and the student explains how the evidence supports a conclusion.
Common Misconceptions: Students may write opinions, such as “the plant looks healthy,” instead of specific details. They may omit units, estimate when a tool is available, or record only results that match their prediction.
How to Assess It: Give each student a leaf and a ruler. Ask for two specific observations, two measurements with units, and one claim supported by the recorded evidence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs two soil samples, hand lenses, rulers, and balances, then have them record color, particle size, and mass in a table.
After comparing two locations, ask, “Which evidence best supports your claim about the warmer place, and why?”
Play Evidence Sort: teams classify statement cards as observation, measurement, or opinion, then correct any misplaced cards.
Track playground temperature and cloud cover for five days, then use the records to recommend the best day for outdoor lunch.
