What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize safe and unsafe actions during classroom and outdoor investigations. They follow directions, use tools carefully, wear required protection, stay within boundaries, and report spills or injuries.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the safe action in a pictured situation and explain their choice. They demonstrate routines such as wearing goggles correctly, carrying tools safely, and washing hands afterward.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think goggles are needed only when a material looks dangerous. They may also touch or taste unknown materials, run with tools, or leave the group outdoors.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of children investigating plants, including one child wandering away and another using tools correctly. Ask students to name one safe action and fix one unsafe action.

Ask students to draw one safe investigation habit and complete the sentence, “I stay safe by...”
Play Safety Charades, with students acting out a classroom or field routine while classmates identify the safe practice.
Compare science safety with kitchen safety by sorting picture cards showing handwashing, tasting, spills, sharp tools, and adult directions.
