What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students spot hazards before an investigation and follow directions that prevent spills, injuries, and unsafe contact with materials. They correctly use goggles, gloves, aprons, and cleanup tools when directed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student puts on required safety equipment correctly and keeps it on during the investigation. They handle materials carefully, report spills or injuries immediately, and follow cleanup directions.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may wear goggles on their forehead or remove them before cleanup is complete. They may smell materials directly, taste substances, or clean spills without telling the teacher. Some think safety rules apply only when dangerous chemicals are present.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “A cup of unknown liquid spills during an investigation. List three safe actions you should take.”

Ways to Teach It
Set up safety stations where students practice fitting goggles, tying aprons, locating the eyewash station, and reporting a pretend spill.
Ask students to write why smelling an unknown material directly or cleaning a spill alone could cause harm.
Play Safety Charades, with students acting out one safe or unsafe lab behavior while classmates identify and correct it.
Compare classroom safety equipment with gear used by firefighters, doctors, construction workers, or park rangers.
