What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize safe and unsafe actions before, during, and after an investigation. They explain and show how to handle materials, protect their bodies, follow directions, and report spills or injuries.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose needed safety gear and use materials only as directed. They walk, keep work areas clear, wash their hands, and tell an adult when something goes wrong.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think goggles are only needed after a spill or that smelling a substance closely is safe. They may also treat investigation tools like toys or clean spills without telling an adult.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of four investigation behaviors and ask students to circle the safe actions. Have each student explain one choice and demonstrate the safer behavior.

Ways to Teach It
Set up a pretend investigation station where students practice wearing goggles, carrying tools, cleaning their space, and washing their hands.
Ask, “What should you do if a cup spills during an investigation?” and record students’ safe steps on a class chart.
Play Safety Charades, with students acting out walking, wearing goggles, reporting a spill, or using tools correctly while classmates name the rule.
Compare classroom safety signs with signs at a pool, park, or doctor’s office, then discuss how each sign helps prevent harm.
