What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify hazards before an investigation and explain how to prevent injuries. They follow directions, use tools correctly, wear protective equipment, and report spills or accidents.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can inspect a setup, point out unsafe actions, and state a safe correction. During classroom and outdoor work, the student follows procedures without repeated reminders.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think goggles are needed only when a material looks dangerous. They may clean spills themselves, smell materials without permission, run with tools, or leave the group outdoors.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: "A cup spills beside a student's feet during an investigation. Write or draw the first two safe actions the student should take."

Ways to Teach It

  1. Set up four safety stations with goggles, a hand lens, a tray, and field flags; students model correct use at each station.

  2. Show a picture of an unsafe investigation and ask, "What could happen, and what should each student do differently?"

  3. Play Safety Charades: students act out a safe or unsafe behavior, and classmates name the rule and correction.

  4. Walk the playground boundary, identify hazards such as ants or broken glass, and practice stopping, backing away, and telling an adult.
