What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify hazards before an investigation begins. They choose and use assigned safety equipment correctly. They follow directions for handling materials, cleaning up, and reporting spills or injuries.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student wears goggles correctly, handles tools as directed, and keeps the work area clear. The student can explain what to do during a spill, injury, or unsafe situation. Outdoors, the student stays within boundaries and avoids unknown plants, animals, and materials.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think goggles are only needed when liquids are used. Some remove safety equipment before cleanup is complete or try to handle spills themselves. Others assume natural objects are safe to touch because they are outdoors.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture of an investigation with four safety problems. Ask them to circle each problem and write the safe action that should replace it.

Ways to Teach It
Set up stations where students practice fitting goggles, carrying tools, cleaning a pretend spill, and washing hands.
Show a lab or fieldwork photo and ask students to write three hazards and the correct response to each.
Play a safety card match game using hazard cards, equipment cards, and action cards.
Before a schoolyard investigation, have students map boundaries, identify possible hazards, and choose needed safety equipment.
