What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students follow classroom and field safety rules before, during, and after an investigation. They select and use equipment such as goggles, gloves, and aprons correctly, and report hazards or injuries right away.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify hazards before starting and choose the correct protective equipment. They handle materials safely, follow directions, keep the work area clear, and respond correctly to spills or injuries.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think goggles are needed only when using chemicals, or that regular glasses provide the same protection. They may clean up spills themselves, taste materials, smell substances directly, or remove safety equipment before cleanup is complete.
How to Assess It
- Give students a picture of an investigation with three unsafe actions. Ask them to circle each hazard and write the safe action that should replace it.

Ways to Teach It
Set up safety stations where students practice fitting goggles, putting on gloves, locating exits, and reporting a pretend spill.
Ask students to write a response to this prompt: What should you do if your partner breaks a container during an investigation?
