K.3 is a knowledge and skills statement. These are the student expectations under it.

  use a resource such as a picture dictionary or digital resource to find words

  use illustrations and texts the student is able to read or hear to learn or clarify word meanings

  identify and use words that name actions; directions; positions; sequences; categories such as colors, shapes, and textures; and locations.

What Students Need to Do

Students use picture dictionaries, digital tools, pictures, and read-alouds to figure out unfamiliar words. They name actions, directions, positions, order, colors, shapes, textures, and locations. They use new words when speaking or writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can find a needed word in a picture dictionary and explain its meaning using a picture or text clue. The student correctly follows and gives directions using words such as behind, turn, first, and next. The student uses new words in clear phrases or sentences.

Common Misconceptions

Students may name an object instead of its action, saying dog rather than running. They often confuse words such as over and under, left and right, or before and after. They may choose a dictionary word without checking whether it fits the picture or sentence.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a child carrying a rough box into a classroom. Ask the student to name one action, texture, and location word, then use each word in a sentence.

   Set up a toy animal scene, then have students move animals using words such as under, beside, first, and hop.

   Read a picture book page and ask students to explain one unfamiliar word using clues from the words and pictures.

   Play Vocabulary Charades with cards showing actions, directions, positions, textures, colors, shapes, sequences, and locations.

   Take a classroom word walk, using a picture dictionary to label locations, textures, shapes, and actions students observe.
