What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use print or digital dictionaries to check a word’s meaning, syllables, and pronunciation. They use clues across sentences to choose the right meaning. They break apart affixes and roots, distinguish homophones, and use new words accurately.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select a meaning that fits the full context and support their choice with clues. They use a dictionary to check meaning, syllables, and pronunciation. They explain common roots and affixes, then use new words and homophones correctly in sentences.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose the first dictionary definition instead of the meaning that fits the passage. They may overlook clues in nearby sentences or treat an affix as a complete word. They may confuse syllables with individual sounds and assume homophones have the same spelling or meaning.

How to Assess It

Give a four-item exit ticket using autograph in a short paragraph and the pair rain and reign. Students define autograph, explain its roots, record its syllabication and pronunciation, and choose the correct homophone.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards and dictionaries; students sort words by affix or root, mark syllables, and practice pronunciations.

  2. Ask students to explain how clues across a paragraph reveal the meaning of a highlighted multiple-meaning word.

  3. Play homophone match: students pair cards such as rain and reign, then use each word in a correct sentence.

  4. Have students inspect a weather report and a royal news headline to compare how rain and reign are used.
