Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose the first dictionary definition instead of the meaning that fits the passage. They may overlook clues in nearby sentences or treat an affix as a complete word. They may confuse syllables with individual sounds and assume homophones have the same spelling or meaning.
How to Assess It
- Give a four-item exit ticket using autograph in a short paragraph and the pair rain and reign. Students define autograph, explain its roots, record its syllabication and pronunciation, and choose the correct homophone.
