Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence. They may treat any nearby word as a context clue. They may split syllables at root boundaries or assume a root gives the full modern meaning.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Use a dictionary and the sentence “The scientist will conduct the test carefully” to give conduct’s meaning, syllabication, pronunciation, part of speech, origin, and root meaning. Then use conduct correctly in a new sentence.
