What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use print or digital references to research a word’s meaning, syllables, pronunciation, origin, and part of speech. They use nearby and broader context to resolve unfamiliar or ambiguous words. They apply Greek and Latin roots to understand and use academic vocabulary.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students locate and report a word’s meaning, syllables, pronunciation, origin, and part of speech. They explain which context clues support a meaning. They use Greek and Latin roots to interpret and correctly use new academic words.

Common Misconceptions

Students often choose the first dictionary definition without checking the sentence. They may treat any nearby word as a context clue. They may split syllables at root boundaries or assume a root gives the full modern meaning.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Use a dictionary and the sentence “The scientist will conduct the test carefully” to give conduct’s meaning, syllabication, pronunciation, part of speech, origin, and root meaning. Then use conduct correctly in a new sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs dictionary pages and word cards to match each word with its meaning, syllabication, pronunciation, origin, and part of speech.

  2. Ask students to explain which clues in a paragraph reveal an ambiguous word’s meaning, then defend their choice in writing.

  3. Play root relay with ast, qui, path, mand, mend, and duc cards, having teams build words and state likely meanings.

  4. Examine a school handbook or news article, highlight academic words with familiar roots, and rewrite three sentences using those words correctly.
