What Students Need to Do

Students use dictionaries and other references to find a word’s meaning, syllables, pronunciation, origin, and part of speech. They use definitions, analogies, examples, and common Greek and Latin roots to work out unfamiliar words. They use new academic words accurately in speech and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select the correct dictionary meaning for a word as it is used in a passage. They explain how context or a Greek or Latin root supports that meaning, then use the word correctly in speaking or writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat any nearby word as a context clue or assume a familiar root gives the whole meaning. They may confuse syllabication with pronunciation, mislabel parts of speech, or copy the first dictionary definition without checking usage.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Give students “benefactor” in a short passage. Ask them to use context, the root bene, and a dictionary to state its meaning, syllabication, pronunciation, origin, part of speech, and one correct sentence.

   Give pairs word cards and dictionaries; students sort by Greek or Latin root, then label meaning, syllables, pronunciation, origin, and part of speech.

   Ask students to explain how a definition, analogy, or example reveals an unfamiliar word, then use the word in an original sentence.

   Run a root relay: teams match mis, bene, man, vac, script, and jus to meanings, derived words, and correct uses.
